BIAB vs Gel Polish: Which One Is Right for You?

Hands down the question I get asked most: "Do I want gel or BIAB?" Honestly, it depends entirely on what your nails are like right now and what you actually want them to do. Here's the plain-English version.

Gel polish: colour, shine, done

Gel polish is basically a regular nail polish that's cured under a UV or LED lamp so it sets hard. The result is a glossy, chip-resistant finish that usually holds up beautifully for around two to three weeks.

It's the right pick if your natural nails are already in decent shape and you just want lovely colour that won't chip the second you load the dishwasher. It doesn't add real structural strength — it's a coat of colour, not a reinforcement. If your nails are bendy or peeling, gel on its own will lift more quickly.

BIAB: a proper reinforcement

BIAB stands for Builder in a Bottle. It's a flexible gel that's applied in a thicker layer as an overlay on your natural nail, cured under the lamp, and (usually) topped with gel polish for colour. It does two jobs at once: it strengthens and protects the natural nail underneath, and gives you a beautiful gel-polish finish on top.

If your nails break easily, peel, or never quite grow past a certain length before splitting — BIAB is the one. It's also brilliant if you want slightly longer nails without going for full acrylic or hard gel extensions. You get the strength with none of the aggressive filing or removal damage.

A BIAB and gel polish manicure at Buds Nails is £30, and infills to maintain an existing BIAB set are also £30.

So — which should you pick?

Go for gel polish if: your natural nails are healthy, not prone to breakage, and you mainly want colour that lasts.

Go for BIAB if: your nails are weak, thin, or break/split before they can grow; you want to actually grow your nails out; you want a bit of extra length without the commitment of extensions; or you'd rather maintain with infills every 3–4 weeks instead of full redoes.

Still not sure? It's genuinely fine to try one at your first appointment and switch next time. I'll always talk you through what your nails look like and recommend what I actually think will work best for you — not the most expensive option.

What about the maintenance?

Both finishes will want re-doing every 2–3 weeks if you want them looking perfect. Gel polish gets soaked off and reapplied each time. BIAB can be infilled (new layer added on top of the existing overlay, buffed to blend) which is quicker and kinder to the natural nail than soaking off and starting over every time.
